SURPRISE! Happy 80th Birthday Rachel! 04/26/2010
Artful Affairs had the honor of coordinating a birthday party event to surprise a 5’2” grandmother of six and known to many as “Big Mama.” Her daughter, Theresa, wanted to show her mother the impact she had on everyone she came in contact with. She contacted Artful Affairs to work out the fine details. Here is a glimpse of the this memorable affair. Guests arrive, sign special cards, and hang them on the birthday wish tree as the branches and crystals twinkle under the spotlight. They begin to explore the centerpieces that incorporate a photo of Rachel at different stages in her life. They drink beer and wine smiling while watching the video-slideshow playing on a larger than life screen. Reminiscing and anticipation grew with each passing minute. As Rachel entered the room expecting her immediate family to greet her for her birthday dinner, what she actually found was a room filled with more than 80 family and friends yelling, “Surprise!” As she stood in awe and shock, we sang “Happy Birthday.” She began walking table-to-table greeting, hugging, kissing her guests who came near and far. She stomped her foot and clapped her hands with excitement like a young child as each face was recognized. When she reached her table, she paused, were her eyes telling her the truth? Could it be? Were these her grade-school friends from the Philippines here to share her birthday? YES! A yelp of delight, shrill and giddy made everyone laugh and cheer more. As Rachel sat and caught her breathe, taking it all in, her eldest grandchildren welcomed everyone and introduced the singing talents of Bevolan. Bevolan performed, “Wind Beneath My Wings” and as she began the second song, “At Last,” Rachel’s favorite song; Rachel and her husband stood up and danced in front of everyone sharing a moment with each other and with all of her guests. It was breathtaking. Dinner is now served. The multi-course meal, delicious and decadent, to signify the abundance Rachel has had in her life. The flowers are simple, delicate, and strong; a reflection of the kind of woman Rachel is. The evening continued with singing from the grandchildren, family portraits, and speeches made in her honor. After the cake cutting she came over to me, she hugged me and said, “Thank you, I am so happy.” 80 years of love and laughter was felt by all. 1 Comment |
